Siracusa 11 July 2008 - Roberto Visentin, Mayor of Siracusa, Nicola Bono, President of the Province, Giambattista Bufardeci, Vice President and Chief of Tourism of the Region of Sicily, Fabio Granata, of the Chamber of Deputies Cultural Affairs Committee, Mariella Muti, superintendent of Cultural and Environmental Patrimony, Corrado Zaccaria, Chief of the Citizens' "Sportello Unico" (One-Stop) services office, and Giulia Randazzo, Manager of the Press and Communications Office, together with Antonello Angeleri, SEAT PG Institutional Relations Manager, and Alfredo Spalletta, Director of the Rome Internet Division of SEAT PG, the European leader in the sector of multimedia telephone directories and hi-tech Internet services, presented the new "Visual Siracusa" portal this morning.

www.pgvisual.it/siracusa

The portal was created by integrating the databases of the Municipality of Siracusa and SEAT Pagine Gialle.

Visual Siracusa provides a complete and geo-referenced overview of tourist, environmental and cultural information, using the maps, high-definition orthophotos (aerial photography) and satellite images of the innovative technological platform of "PagineGialle Visual"

Thanks to the simple and user-friendly interface, on "Visual Siracusa" users can find every category of tourist interest and more:
  • Tourist attractions and archaelogical sites
  • Museums
  • Entertainment
  • Live performances
  • Sport and wellness
  • Transport
  • Where to eat
  • Where to sleep
  • Tourist information

There is also an up-to-date section on what events, happenings, performances are currently running as well as main tourist attractions like archaelogical sites.

Through the portal, it is also possible to book and purchase tickets for events online, in an easy and safe way.

"Visual Siracusa" also offers the unique opportunity: taking a virtual 85-km stroll through the centre of Siracusa, which is a World Heritage City.

It also includes the SEAT Pagine Gialle system services (to search for businesses, products and services in the Sicily region or find individuals in PagineBianche) and the exclusive content of "PagineGialleVisual":

  • real-time information on traffic on the main arteries of the region
  • 4-day weather forecasts with a precision of 5 km
  • 3D views of the entire regional territory
  • virtual strolls through the streets of Siracusa
  • create routes
  • book hotels

"Visual Siracusa" can leverage the significant traffic results of PagineGialle Visual — which has reached as many as 1.5 million unique users per month — and the other online directories of SEAT Pagine Gialle which have already exceeded 340 million hits this year.

“Thanks to the optimal collaboration between public and private entities – stated Mayor Roberto Visentin — our town council is able to offer a series of services to both its citizens and those who wish to get acquainted with Syracuse. In the age of the Internet and high-speed information, we must be able to fully exploit the technological highways and quickly provide people the answers they need. This is yet another way for us to systematically gain visibility, and establish beneficial relationships with entities in far away places and industry leaders in sectors not typically associated with a local entity. I would like to thank our offices for proving themselves capable of meeting the challenges of our era.”

“I feel the potential benefits of this initiative could not be better», stated the President of the Province Nicola Bono. “In an era where highways over land, sky and sea have been joined by the great virtual highway, the Internet, we cannot ignore the indispensable role it can play as a tool by which to sustain and expand tourism in our area. Besides tourists, this will also benefit local citizens, as it will allow them to obtain information regarding services and travel right from home and make it easier for them to plan their activities. It therefore serves as an example for running our Public Administration in a new, modern, efficient way. These methods allow us to better promote our territory, which has always been the principal goal of the Province.”

“Sicily is home to unique treasures that attract millions of visitors each year, yet it is also a land that suffers from the lack of tangible and intangible infrastructures,”
stated Vice President and Chief of Tourism of the Region, Giambattista Bufardeci . “We must reach out into the world, and the Internet is a formidable tool we can exploit to the fullest to overcome distances. With this Portal the County of Syracuse will become a virtual role model, an example I hope all local communities will follow. My hometown, asset to Humanity, shows it can adapt its role to be dynamic, and contemporary”.

“Today is an important day in our history of protecting, safeguarding, and promoting our territory,”
stated Fabio Granata, member of the Culture Committee of the Chamber of Deputies . “Contemporary history mandates we welcome this choice and the incredible value-adding opportunity it represents for our city. When we acknowledge the fact that 60% of the international market makes travel plans over the internet, we can better understand the importance of this innovative tool. I still maintain that there is a vast difference between a traveller and a tourist, and I hope Syracuse will increasingly become a destination sought after by travellers who appreciate the richness of our heritage.”

“Visual Siracusa, besides the scope of information it provides, must also be valued because it allows us to offer quick, always up-to-date information to both citizens and tourists”,
stated Mariella Muti, Superintendent of Cultural Assets . “We feel that now we can truly communicate any news or updates in a timely manner, which will not only permanently increase our efficiency, but also eliminate any possibility of disservice».

“We are proud to introduce the Visual Siracusa portal, which I am certain will further strengthen the relationship between Seat and the Municipality of Siracusa,”
noted Alfredo Spalletta, Director of the Internet Division of Rome of SEAT Pagine Gialle. He added : “This agreement is proof of the partnership of excellence that companies and institutions can establish. The objective is to make full use of the opportunities provided by Italian industries, by proposing increasingly functional instruments to meet the need for information, research and services of all citizens.”
